Algeria and the Subversion of the Renewed Colonial Discourse
by hassouni mohamed abd elghani
Introduction:
Algeria is considered one of the countries that suffered greatly under French colonization, which lasted for nearly 132 years. This colonization left deep impacts on all aspects of life in Algeria, including culture, economy, and society. However, despite the independence achieved in 1962, the effects of colonization did not disappear entirely but continued to manifest in various forms. One of the most prominent of these is what is called the "renewed colonial discourse." This discourse aims to distort historical facts, criticize the Algerian national struggle, and reshape the Algerian identity to align with Western agendas. This article highlights how Algeria has subverted this colonial discourse through its cultural, political, and humanitarian policies.
The Concept of the Renewed Colonial Discourse:
The renewed colonial discourse refers to the continuation of previous colonial mechanisms, which did not only involve military conquest but extended to reshaping the cultural and historical memory of the colonized peoples. After the end of direct colonization, some Western powers attempted to impose new forms of hegemony through historical distortion and cultural subjugation. In relation to Algeria, this discourse aimed to reinterpret the Algerian revolution as a conspiracy or internal conflict rather than a struggle for national liberation.
The most prominent manifestations of this discourse are found in Western media, which often promotes a distorted image of Algeria, in addition to attempts to highlight economic and social failures without acknowledging the magnitude of the sacrifices made by the Algerian people for their independence. There is also a focus on political interventions and attempts to impose Western values and theories on Algerian societies.
Algeria's Efforts to Combat the Renewed Colonial Discourse:
Algeria has been at the heart of an ongoing battle against this renewed colonial discourse. At every stage of its modern history, Algeria has made consistent efforts to prove its political and cultural independence. These efforts can be summarized in the following points:
Independent Foreign Policy: Since its independence, Algeria has worked to strengthen its sovereignty on the international stage through a non-aligned foreign policy, supporting national liberation movements worldwide. By adopting a stance rejecting Western hegemony, Algeria actively participated in the establishment of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Revival of Historical Memory: Algeria has made significant efforts to revive the collective memory of the Algerian people through cultural and educational institutions focused on the history of the Algerian revolution. School curricula in Algeria are a prime example of this, as they aim to teach new generations the true struggle of their ancestors against colonization, as well as the promotion of historical artifacts in cultural and museum centers.
Resistance to Cultural and Intellectual Attacks: Algeria worked to strengthen its national identity in the face of cultural invasion through cinema, literature, and music, which reflect the history of the struggle. Additionally, Algeria has directed local literature and art to serve the causes of national liberation and to free the national image from attempts to distort it by certain Western circles.
The Role of Media in Combating the Colonial Discourse:
The media is one of Algeria’s most important tools in countering the renewed colonial discourse. Through national media, Algeria succeeded in raising awareness about its history and informing both the local and international public about the true reality of Algeria, away from Western distortions. The media also helped combat false news reports aimed at weakening the national identity.
At the same time, Algeria demonstrated its ability to influence global media through modern platforms such as the internet and social media, allowing it to present its own narrative to the world regarding the major events in its modern history.
Cultural and Artistic Discourse in the Face of Renewed Colonization:
Cultural and artistic discourse has contributed to subverting the renewed colonial discourse by reinforcing Algerian cultural identity. In contemporary Algerian literature, many works challenge colonialism and showcase the strength of the Algerian people in confronting colonial dominance. Postcolonial literature, for example, addresses issues such as historical memory, cultural identity, and the challenges facing Algeria after independence.
In cinema and theater, many artistic works have been linked to authentically conveying the colonial experience and critiquing colonial practices through works that depicted the suffering of the Algerian people during the colonial period, as well as the role of resistance in liberating the country.
Challenges Facing Algeria in This Field:
Despite ongoing efforts to resist the colonial discourse, Algeria still faces several challenges, including:
Political Pressure: From certain Western powers attempting to influence political decisions in Algeria.
Cultural Threats: There are continuous attempts to flood Algerian culture with Western values through certain cultural events supported by colonial powers.
Internal Challenges: These are manifested in political and economic crises, which could be exploited by colonial powers to affect Algeria's stability.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, it can be said that since its independence, Algeria has been continuously confronting the renewed colonial discourse. Despite the external pressures it faces, Algeria has managed to subvert this discourse by strengthening its political sovereignty and national culture. Additionally, the revival of historical memory and the use of arts and media as resistance tools have been among its main strategies in this regard. However, the road remains long in facing the challenges that arise from time to time, yet Algeria remains steadfast in its positions, always striving to achieve further progress and preserve its cultural and political independence.
