Algeria Criminalizes French Colonization and Demands Apology and Return of Looted Funds
Written by the researcher, Hassouni Mohammed Abdel Ghani
The approval of the law criminalizing French colonization is a confirmation of a documented historical truth, not merely an emotional narrative. From 1830 to 1962, French colonization was not just a fleeting administrative presence; it was a comprehensive, destructive settler-colonial project. This project involved widespread human extermination, systematic destruction of homes and mosques, a deliberate elimination of educational resources, and a targeted effort to uproot the Arabic language from the public sphere as a carrier of national identity and collective memory.

Even today, the remnants of this colonial project persist through more subtle means, as France continues to support networks and discourses promoting artificial identities, such as "Amazigh," while fueling hostility towards the Arabic language. This is a direct continuation of the policies of division and alienation that France sought to impose during its colonial rule.

Criminalizing colonization is not an act of vengeance but a necessary step to correct historical knowledge, to seek justice for the past, and to protect the future. An essential part of this process is restoring the status of the national language and freeing administration and education from linguistic dependency. True independence cannot be achieved as long as the colonizer’s language remains a permanent influence over minds. Thus, this struggle is not merely a matter of enacting a law; it is a battle for awareness and national sovereignty.
