I just spoke with our employees about what we've learned about remote working and how we're planning to support it moving forward. I know many other organizations are thinking about this too, so I'm sharing this summary in case it's helpful.

Over the next 5-10 years, I think we could have 50% of our people working remotely, but we're going to get there in a measured way. I think Facebook will be the most forward-leaning company on remote work at our scale, and we've been working on a thoughtful and responsible plan to do this. There are still a lot of open questions about how this will work, so we'll need to keep learning and improving as we go.

There are some very clear benefits to remote work. It lets us access talent pools outside of traditional tech hubs in big cities -- and that should help spread economic opportunity much more widely around the country and world while also helping us build a more diverse company. It should be better for the environment because of reduced commuting. Since many people feel more productive outside the office, it should help us better serve our community. For us specifically, it should help us advance some of the future technology we're developing. Since so much of what we build is around helping people feel connected and present with others no matter where they are -- like our private messaging apps, video chat, Workplace, Portal, and eventually virtual and augmented reality -- living our values will help us accelerate the development of these technologies.

We asked our employees about their experiences working from home. More than half of them say they're at least as productive as they are in the office. About 40% are interested in full-time remote work, but more than 50% want to get back into the offices as soon as possible. Of the people who want to work remotely, around 75% said they might move to another place -- and of those, 38% said they'd move to a big city while the rest said they'd live elsewhere.

It's not all positive. Having kids home from school has been tough for parents, and people living on their own have struggled too. It can be hard to find the right work life balance without a clear boundary between work and home. I'm also concerned about weaker social bonds between colleagues, especially new hires, and there’s an open question about whether groups of people are less creative when they’re not together. I think most of us would really like to just see one another in person again as soon as possible.

There are lots of open questions that we can't answer right now and will have to figure out over the coming years. How do we encourage creativity and maintain our culture when we’re seeing each other less? What's the best way to make sure everyone has equal opportunities for career advancement and feels equally connected to the work, whether they're remote or not? Hiring remotely should help us build and retain a more diverse workforce, but if remote work ends up being harder, how do we prevent that from disproportionately affecting people from underrepresented groups? How can we design great career ladders for ambitious people who would normally thrive in an office environment? What about new college graduates who need more training?

Figuring all this out will take time, so we're going to start by focusing on remote hiring. We're going to start by focusing on hiring experienced engineers within 4 hours of a city where we have an engineering office (which includes places like Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland and San Diego). We're also setting up new hubs in Atlanta, Dallas and Denver.

This is probably overdue. Over the past few decades, economic growth in the US has been quite concentrated, with major companies often hiring in a handful metropolitan areas. That means we've been missing out on a lot of talented people just because they happen to live outside a major hub. Creating opportunities beyond these cities could also be part of the economic recovery, especially if more companies hire remotely as well.

For our existing employees, our guiding principle is figuring out what will enable us to serve our community best and unlock the most innovation. My own thinking on this has changed over the past few months. I've always felt that our teams worked better when they could physically be together. We even designed our offices so there are places where people can walk freely and have those serendipitous conversations that can lead to really good ideas. But I think that technology can help us overcome this, and the lockdown has shown us what’s possible with the tools we have today.

Right now, the vast majority of employees are already working remotely and that will likely continue for months to come. We've already announced that anyone who can work from home is welcome to do so at least through 2020. Eventually we want to enable many existing employees to become long term remote workers if they want, but we're going to roll this out in a measured way so we can learn as we go.

Approaching this thoughtfully and methodically will help us strengthen parts of our culture that are really important. We've invested a lot of our time in developing programs that help every individual grow their career and help teams execute together effectively and we’re going to need to bring that same care and commitment to our remote work programs too. Products can get built in months, but culture is built over years, so we’re taking a long term approach.

At the same time, we know a lot of people also want to get back in the office as soon as possible. Our priority is people who can't productively do their work from home -- those who work on hardware, some of our content reviewers, data center technicians, and other specialized roles. Part of keeping these folks safe in the office is giving them space and keeping others away until it's clearly safe for more people to return, so we’re going to continue managing our overall office load and figuring out how to space out desks and equipment. With social distancing, we expect to only be able to fit 25% of employees back in the office for much of the rest of this year.

As a tech company we're fortunate that a lot of our work can be done remotely. Not everyone has that flexibility. But as the technology improves, the number of jobs that can be done fully remotely will likely increase across the rest of the economy too. Over time, location will hopefully be less of a factor in how many people work and we’ll have the technology to feel truly present no matter where we are. I think this is an important direction that the world is going to go in after Covid, and that's why we're building products to help more organizations find ways to work remotely, as well as more ways for people to connect and feel present socially.

It's going to take time to make this work for everyone. We're going to learn a lot from this, and we'll have more updates and details to share in the months ahead as we figure this out.

I just announced that we're launching Facebook Shops today – the basic idea is that any small business can easily start a shop to sell things directly across our apps. If you visit someone's shop, you'll be able to see that small business's story, see their featured products, and buy them in our apps.

I think this particularly important right now because so many small businesses are moving online to deal with the economic fallout from Covid-19. As people are being told to stay home, physical storefronts are having a hard time staying open and millions of people are losing their jobs. I've been personally working with our teams on Facebook Shops every day for the last couple of months so we could accelerate launching it to small businesses who could use tools like this now.

Facebook Shops are free and easy to create. When you set up your shop, it will appear on your Facebook and Instagram accounts to start and soon on Messenger and WhatsApp too. Shops are native and fast, which means no more app-switching to a slow mobile web browser where you have to reenter your credit card when you tap on an interesting product you see in feeds. We're also working with partners like Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Channel Advisor, CedCommerce, Cafe24, Tienda Nube and Feedonomics so that small businesses can easily integrate into a strong, open ecosystem of tools to help them manage their customer journey end-to-end, and it's up to the business to decide what level of integration they want.

On top of that, we’re building a bunch of features across our apps to help people discover things from small businesses that they might want to buy. We're building a dedicated shopping tab on Instagram and a destination inside Explore where you can find and buy products you might be interested in. Soon, we'll also be launching new Live shopping features across Facebook and Instagram, which will allow you to shop on Live in real-time.

Lastly, in the near future Shops will use our AI and augmented reality tech to create better shopping experiences. We'll automatically identify and tag products in feeds so people can easily click-through to purchase when they find things they like. Small businesses will also be able to personalize their storefronts to first show products that are most relevant to you and use augmented reality to let you virtually try on things like sunglasses, lipstick or makeup to see how they might look on you before buying, or what furniture might look like in your room.

This all adds up to something quite powerful. If you're running a small business or you're thinking of starting one – even from your living room – you now have a whole suite of tools available that can help you serve people. You can build out your online presence across Facebook and Instagram. You can use Messenger and WhatsApp to communicate with your customers. You can reach new customers through our ads. And now, you can also set up a full online store experience with Facebook Shops. All of these tools are open for business, even when your physical storefront can't be. Hopefully this helps relieve some of the pressure that small businesses are facing right now and helps them prepare for a more online future. I look forward to getting Shops into the world more widely -- let us know what you think!

Messenger Rooms is now available to everyone in the US, Canada and Mexico, and will be available to everyone globally in the next week!

With so many people at home around the world, we're all relying on video chat to feel present with the people we care about. WhatsApp and Messenger are already the most popular video calling services globally, but for large groups most of the video services out there are designed for work, not social interactions. Messenger Rooms is group video chat designed for social interactions. Rooms have no time limits, can host up to 50 people, and you can create them for free across Messenger, Facebook, and soon Instagram and WhatsApp as well.

You can create a private room and invite a few friends with a link, or you can create a room for one of your groups, or for an event you're planning. You can also start a room for all your friends at the top of your News Feed and just see who stops by to say hi. You don't need to schedule time to hang out like other video conferencing tools -- it's much more serendipitous and fun. I've really enjoyed using it as we've been building it. I've gotten to catch up with a lot of people I miss seeing around but wouldn't have necessarily called on my own. Try it out and I'm interested to see what you think!

I just shared our quarterly community update and business results. Right now, we're focused on three major areas of the response to Covid-19: helping people stay connected while we're apart, assisting the public health response, and working on the economic recovery, especially for small businesses. Our community now has more than 3 billion people who use our services monthly, and more than 2.3 billion who use at least one of our services every day. Here's what I said on our call:

---

Thanks everyone for joining us today. Before we get started, I just want to say that I know this is a very hard time for a lot of people. I know a lot of people are calling in from New York, where this has been particularly tough, although almost everyone has been affected by what's going on in some way. So I just want to start by acknowledging that, and taking a moment to thank everyone working on the frontlines to help all of us get through this.

There is a lot of uncertainty now about the world and what it will look like over the coming months, and Sheryl and Dave will give some more context on what that means for our business. The impact on our business has been significant, and I remain very concerned that this health emergency and therefore the economic fallout will last longer than people are currently anticipating. And while there are massive societal costs from the current shelter-in-place restrictions, I worry that re-opening certain places too quickly before infection rates have been reduced to very minimal levels will almost guarantee future outbreaks and worse longer term health and economic outcomes.

With that said, I want to use this time today to discuss how we're responding to Covid, what we're seeing across our services, and some reflections on how we plan to run the company going forward.

Our response has been focused on three areas: helping people stay connected while we're all apart, assisting the public health response, and working on the economic recovery, especially for small businesses.

I'll start with how we're assisting the public health response.

The first step here is connecting people with authoritative health information. We built a Covid-19 Information Center with authoritative information from health officials and governments, and messages encouraging people to stay home that are coming from public figures they trust. We put this Covid-19 Information Center at the top of everyone's Facebook app, and so far we’ve directed more than 2 billion people to it.

Equally important is also limiting the spread of misinformation. We don't allow content that puts people at imminent risk of physical harm, so when people share hoaxes like that inhaling water cures Covid -- which is both false and will be physically harmful if anyone does that -- we take that down. For other types of misinformation, we partner with independent fact-checkers, who have marked more than 4,000 pieces of content related to Covid as false, which has resulted in more than 40 million warning labels being seen across our services. And we know these work because 95% of the time when someone sees a warning label, they don't click through to view that content.

Beyond helping people broadly access high quality information, we're also focused on helping governments and health authorities get better data in a privacy protective way to inform key policy decisions that they need to make as well. We partnered with Carnegie Mellon to run a widespread symptom survey on Facebook, and we're using their findings to produce daily county-by-county maps of the symptoms people are experiencing across the country, and soon globally as well. Since people experiencing symptoms is a precursor to them going to the hospital or getting more seriously ill, this tool can help local governments and health officials plan how to allocate scarce resources like PPE and ventilators, as well as determine when it is safe to start re-opening an area -- or when an area will need to have tighter shelter orders if symptoms re-emerge.

Just this morning, we announced that we're working to connect these symptom surveys to ground truth infection rate data from large serology and PCR studies that are funded separately by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative in order to more accurately determine the true infection and exposure levels globally in a local region basis as well.

This is work we're uniquely positioned to do because Facebook is a global community and people use their authentic identities on our service so that means we can make sure the data is meaningful. But we're very focused on doing this work in ways we know will be helpful to the health response and that protects people's privacy and human rights, which is why we've primarily focused on how aggregate data can help.

Outside of Facebook, Priscilla and my work at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative alongside leading experts in science and health continues to inform my views on the best ways for us to assist in this health response and also what we should expect going forward with this disease.

Next I want to discuss how we're helping people stay connected with the people they care about, even while we can't be together during this period.

This is our core mission, and I'm proud of how we've supported people around the world during this time. We know that people especially rely on social apps in times of crisis and in times when we can't be together in person. Right now we're experiencing both of those all around the world at the same time, so we're seeing major increases in use of our services.

For the first time ever, there are now more than 3 billion people actively using Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or Messenger each month. That includes 2.6 billion people using Facebook alone, and more than 2.3 billion people using at least one of our services every day. In many of the places that have been hardest hit by the virus, messaging volume increased more than 50%, and voice and video calling have more than doubled across Messenger and WhatsApp. In Italy, for example, we've seen up to 70% more time spent across our apps, Instagram and Facebook Live views doubled in one week, and we’ve also seen time in group video calling increase by over 1,000% in March.

Making sure our services are stable and reliable during this period is a top priority. We're monitoring usage closely and adding capacity in our data centers where we can. The investments we've made in the shared infrastructure that powers all of our different services over the years have helped us manage through this, but it has been a challenge while all our teams have been working remotely.

I'm sharing these numbers to give you a sense of the surge in people relying on these services that we're seeing. Obviously I wish the circumstances were different, and I don't expect this exact spike in usage to sustain over a longer period of time. But in some areas, I think we are seeing an acceleration in pre-existing long-term trends -- like the dramatic increase in online private social communication -- that is likely to continue. If nothing else, this usage shows that for a lot people around the world these services are part of the social infrastructure that brings us together.

Even before Covid-19, our product strategy was already focused on building out private social platforms and enabling online commerce, so it is well-aligned with what people need now.

Last week, we announced a number of new product improvements around video presence, which has emerged as an especially critical part of the private social platform during this time. Our view is that video presence includes three categories -- video calling, video rooms, and live video -- and we plan to lead and offer the best services for social uses in each of those different categories.

Video calling is when you actually ring a person's phone or computer and it's by far the most used type of video chat. Between WhatsApp and Messenger, there are more than 700 million daily actives participating in calls. We're doubling the size of WhatsApp video calls from 4 to 8. This is important because WhatsApp is the most popular end-to-end encrypted calling service, so if you care about privacy and encryption and you want to be able to reach anyone, you're probably using WhatsApp. Now you’re going to be able to get your whole family or a larger group together on calls.

For video rooms, we announced a completely new product called Messenger Rooms. The idea is you can create a room for any activity or event you want, send a link to your friends or have them discover your room on Facebook, and they can drop by and hang out for a bit. This is different from any other video presence experience because it's serendipitous. You don't have to plan out an event and schedule it in advance if you don't want -- it can be much more spontaneous and fun. I've really enjoyed getting to use this as we've been building Messenger Rooms and I'm looking forward to getting it in more people's hands around the world soon.

Live video is also particularly important right now. People used to primarily livestream physical events, but since almost no one is planning physical events right now, live-streaming has become the primary venue for many events -- whether that's the Pope's weekly mass on Facebook Live or DJs hosting dance parties on Instagram. Every day more than 800 million daily actives are engaging with livestreams across workout classes, concerts, and more. We've pivoted the Facebook Events team to help people create online events, including enabling people and small businesses to charge people to join their events in order to support businesses that relied on in-person services before.

The last area of our response I want to discuss is how we're helping with the economic recovery, especially for small businesses.

Sheryl will talk about this more, but with so many businesses forced to close their physical storefronts, more are looking to build their digital presences and those which already invested in their digital presences are increasingly viewing them as their primary storefronts. We're working on a number of ways to deepen this experience -- helping people buy items and services directly within our apps -- and we’re going to have a lot more to share soon. Overall though, our business depends on the success of small businesses. This is a moment where we feel that we are well-positioned to be champions for small businesses' interests and supporters of important infrastructure that they’re going to need in order to move online.

One aspect of online commerce I want to mention is the partnership we just announced with Jio Platforms in India. The largest Facebook and WhatsApp communities in the world are in India, and we think there's an especially important opportunity to serve small businesses and enable commerce there over the long term. By bringing together JioMart, which is Jio's small business initiative to connect millions of shops across India, with WhatsApp, we think that we’re going to be able to create a much better shopping experience. There's a lot more we can do here and I'm looking forward to making progress with the team at Jio.

Now, beyond our immediate plans to help respond to the pandemic, I want to share some reflections on how we're planning to run the company during this period.

I've always believed that in times of economic downturn the right thing to do is to keep investing in building the future. I believe this for a few reasons. First, when the world changes quickly, people have new needs and that means that there are more new things to build. Second, since many big companies will pull back on their investments, there are a lot of things that wouldn't otherwise get built but that we can help deliver. And third, I believe there is a sense of responsibility and duty to invest in the economic recovery and provide stability for your community and stakeholders if you have the ability to do so.

We’re in a fortunate position to be able to do this. Along with our strong financial position and the important social value our services provide, we're planning to hire at least 10,000 more people in product and engineering roles this year so we can continue building and making progress. That said, with advertisers spending less and our business performance below previous expectations, we do plan to moderate some areas of our expense growth, especially in business functions. We accept that our profit margins will decrease this year as we continue investing, and Dave will share more on our financial outlook in a few minutes. But this economic pullback has certainly reinforced for me the importance of maintaining high margins. Our financial position has allowed us to continue investing in building products and making investments like our partnership with Jio even when the underlying economic conditions are challenging.

As always, I am grateful to everyone on this journey with us, and that's especially true during this period. As our services play an especially important role right now -- in helping people stay connected, in assisting the public health response, and working on the economic recovery -- I really want to thank all of our employees who are working hard to deliver these services, and everyone who has believed in us and supported our company over the years to help us get to the point where can deliver these services for people around the world.
