The nation's decline in reading cannot be attributed to poverty alone; the reasons are multiple and intertwined. It is true that some people link the lack of reading to financial circumstances, but this excuse is often superficial. In our current era, books are more accessible and less expensive, whether through traditional or digital markets. Public libraries even offer books for free, and there are thousands of open sources online for anyone who wants to read.

The real issue lies in cultural priorities and societal values. Many people prefer to spend on luxuries, such as coffee or electronic devices, while viewing books as unnecessary. This reflects a decline in the appreciation of knowledge and reading as part of daily life.

Moreover, the rise of fast entertainment media like social media and short videos has played a significant role in changing cultural habits, with reading now seen as an activity that requires time and effort—qualities that many lack due to busyness or distraction.

Therefore, the issue is not material poverty as much as it is intellectual and cultural poverty, and a lack of awareness about the importance of reading as a means of personal and societal development. Those who truly want to read will find a way, even if the books are secondhand or digital. The problem lies in willpower, not money.
