Trump's declaration of his desire to annex Canada and Greenland to the United States to make them U.S. states may seem like a joke or just a provocation unrelated to reality. However, it is achievable when considering the history of the United States itself. The United States was originally formed from 13 British colonies on the eastern coast, but over time, it expanded, sometimes peacefully and sometimes through war, to include new territories on the continent. The U.S. acquired colonies peacefully from France, such as Louisiana, which became American states. After Western states gained independence from Britain, they joined the United States. When the state of Texas declared its separation from Mexico, the United States supported it, leading to a fierce war between the two countries, which the United States won. U.S. forces occupied Mexico's capital, captured the Mexican president, and forced Mexico to recognize Texas' independence. Mexico also ceded northern California and other territories, including Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and others. A referendum was held in Texas in which the people gave up their independence and joined the United States. Today, Texas is the second largest state by area. The United States also purchased the Alaska colony from Russia, which later became the largest U.S. state by area. At the end of the 19th century, the Spanish-American War broke out, ending with the defeat of the Spanish, who ceded their remaining colonies in the Americas and Oceania to the United States. The U.S. incorporated some of them (Florida and Hawaii) into its states, while granting independence to others (Cuba). Thus, the United States became composed of 50 states and became the third largest country in the world by area, after Russia and Canada.

Naturally, the circumstances under which the United States expanded are different from today’s world conditions, and Canada would never accept relinquishing its existence, nor would Denmark agree to part with Greenland, which its people would not accept separating from Denmark. Even U.S. politicians from both major parties would not endorse such Trumpian proposals, seeing that their country is already large enough and that American influence in the world is more important than such territorial ambitions.

If Trump's dream of annexing Canada and Greenland, with their vast areas (and relatively few inhabitants compared to their size), were to be realized, the United States would become the largest country in the world by area, with an area of about 22 million square kilometers.

The current area of the United States is 9,820,675 square kilometers.
- Canada: 9,984,670 square kilometers
- Greenland: 2,166,086 square kilometers

Canada would become the largest U.S. state if its provinces were not preserved in their current form within the Union. Greenland, which is now a Danish territory, would be the second-largest state, and possibly the largest if Canada were annexed as separate states according to its current administrative divisions. Greenland would be the least populated state, with a current population of about 50,000.

It is worth noting that, according to Trump’s ambitions, the United States would still have a smaller area than the former Soviet Union, whose area was 22,402,200 square kilometers.

Perhaps the Mongol Empire was the largest country in Earth's history, and God knows best.
