Serious Escalation in Algerian-French Relations: Consequences of the Continuation of French Provocations

Recently, Algerian-French relations have witnessed an unprecedented escalation, marked by the continuous provocations from the French authorities toward Algeria. This escalation reached its peak when the French judiciary decided to place one of Algeria's consular employees in temporary detention, a move that Algeria considers to be a blatant and unjustified provocation. In this context, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official protest to France, with the Secretary-General of the Ministry, Mr. Lounes Magramane, meeting with the French Ambassador to Algeria, Mr. Stéphane Romatet, to present Algeria's position rejecting these actions, which violate the established diplomatic norms between countries.
The temporary detention of the Algerian consular employee was based on French accusations involving his alleged involvement in the kidnapping of the criminal known as "Amir Boukhors," nicknamed "Amir de Zade" in 2024. Despite these accusations, Algeria has categorically rejected the charges outlined in the French court's decision, deeming the motives behind this decision unacceptable and unsupported by tangible legal evidence. Algeria views this judicial campaign against its consular employee as an attempt to influence the course of bilateral relations and hinder the efforts of reconciliation and cooperation that were agreed upon between the two heads of state.
Formally, Algeria rejects outright the manner in which the legal proceedings were conducted against its consular employee. The employee was arrested in the street and placed in detention without prior notification through the approved diplomatic channels between the two countries, which constitutes a serious violation of the privileges and immunities internationally granted to diplomatic and consular staff.
